Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

My battle began when I had a loss, but then it also started w/just being happy again, and having a wonderful husband, that Loves me no matter how big, or small I am.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Just not looking pritty anymore, I use to look really good, now, I'm just too puffy w/weight.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I can sit and cross my legs like a lady at the meetings, it's so nice too that some of my skirts are loose. I can't wait to try on my new dresses when I loose, I want to look young again, instead of like a fat puffy old bag lady :) My cousin looks wonderful, and I think I will look good like her, when I loose this weight , she had the sergery almost 2 years ago, and she has lost over 100lbs. :)

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

Well, I have had several people in my family do it, and also know many friends that have had wonderful success.

Describe your experience with getting insurance approval for surgery. What advice, if any, do you have for other people in this stage?

Well, I was very happy when I was approved, and my advice would be, if your insurence company pays for it, do it, because hopefully it will add many years to your life, and you will enjoy yourself alot better if your thinner, you will have more energy.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

I was in the hospital just 1 day, was not very happy that they were giving me sink water to drink, from the bathroom in my room, YUCK ! I actually caught the c-diff bug from it, and was very sick. I had to go back to a differnt hospital that same night I got home, to get re-hydrated, because I just could not drink that bathroom sink water. If I had to do it again, I would bring 4 bottles of Pure Water from home to drink. So I know that I am drinking good fresh water.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

Just that it was very differnt from what I was "told" it would be. I tried to ask questions, but they just thought I was a nut case, wasn't to happy about that !

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I felt really good, as if I didn't even have sergery, I wish I could see the DVD of my sergery, because I'm not sure they really did the sergery on me. No foods are getting me sick like they said they would, and I could drink normal right away, not just sip-sip-sip, and I could also drink cold water.

Describe your first few weeks home from the hospital. What should people expect from this period?

don't expect to loose weight right away. I don't eat that much, and it's still comming off way to slow, not too sure what to think???

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

I don't really have an after care support, I just have my frinds and family, I think support groups are for people who need attention, I don't have time to feel sorry for myself, or sit and listen to people wine.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

My scars are very good, can't hardly see them.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

Yes for some reason, I lost like 22 lbs right aay, and now I'm stuck at 215, it's like my body does not want to loose. w/the tiny bit of food I eat, I should be really loosing, but I'm not. It's so fluterating !!

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

no, right now there are not to many people that know. But Ithink they might notic soon, if I could loose some weight.
