Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

As a kid, teen, and a young adult, I was pretty average weight. I gained quite a bit of weight during and after the birth of my second child. It has been a battle of various diets over the last 15 years. I am a happy go lucky girl, but miss out on a lot of wonderful things due to my weight...Riding roller coasters with my kids, running after them at the park...Not offering my help at school for fear of my childern being ridiculed as a result of my weight.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Being a bistandard in my own life...Just watching vs participating.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Too soon to know...Hope to be running around with my teenagers and riding roller coasters with them!!

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

When my brother had it done 10 years ago...He was looking for it to be the solution to his problem instead of a tool to help him. He was unsucessful. I thought I would never do it...I tried every other diet before electing to do it...So glad I did.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

The hospital was Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach. It was incredible! They were wonderful there. I was there for 6 days. Don't bring anything to the hospital....You won't need it!

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

I had swelling in my esophagas which caused me not to be able to swallow liquids. It delayed me going home by 3 days. I kinda got stressed out from being in the hospital so long. I am usually pretty positive and upbeat...I was kinda a jerk, impatient and wanted to go home.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I feel really good...I don't like eating (Never thought that would happen!) I find I am only eating to survive. Eating makes me feel not so good. No anxiety to report

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

Dr. Quebbemans office has a support group that is pretty nice. I wish it had meeting weekly instead of monthly. I think it is an important part of the process.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

I have 6 little scars..I think with time they will disapear. They look really good. Better than I expected!!

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

No platueas as of yet. Weight is melting off! 30 lbs off in 3 1/2 weeks! Yipee!!

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

Lots of comments on how good I look. I think people really don't know what to say. They are afraid of hurting my feelings.
