Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I had poor eating and exercise habits. Constantly yo-yo dieting to try to lose weight.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Not neing comfortable in one's skin and not being in complete control of your body.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Being able to go clothes shopping and knowing that the clothes will fit. Being able to tie my shoes comfortable. Walking up the stairs without getting winded. Being able to cross my legs.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I have known about bariatric surgery for many years and in the previous times the impressions weren't good as there was many complications associated with the surgery.

Describe your experience with getting insurance approval for surgery. What advice, if any, do you have for other people in this stage?

I must say that once I've completed all the requirements I didn't have any problems with approval.

What was your first visit with your surgeon like? How can people get the most out of this meeting?

My 1st visit with my surgeon went well as I did my homework prior to mt consult. Preparation is the key to getting the most out ot the initial meeting as well as having questions ready.

What made you finally decide to have the surgery?

I knew other people who had surgery with my surgeon and their experience was very positive. I knew that this was a good decision for me.

How did you decide which proceedure to have?

I felt that the RNY procedure would give me the best results and help me lose the weight quicker than other surgical options.

What fears did you have about having complications or even dying from from the surgery, and what would you tell other people having the same fears now?

I went into the surgery with a positive outlook as well as followed my surgeron instructions for preparation of the surgery. I would tell people to listen to their surgeons recommendations and to also make sure to start moving as soon as possible after surgery. This can help to prevent clotting as well as help the healing process.

How did your family and friends react to your decision? Would you have communicated anything differently if you could now? How supportive were they after your surgery?

I have an excellent support system from my family. The hardest part was telling them my decision, but they were open-minded and understood why I needed to do this.

How did your employer/supervisor react to your decision? What did you tell him/her? How long were you out of work?

I honestly didn't care what my supervisor thought, but she was supportive of my decision. I was out of work for four weeks.
