Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I had been on many diets over my life. Lost weight and then gained it back. After so many years of being unsuccessful, I investigated the possibility of have WLS.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Having to lug around the weight my knees were killing me. I could barely walk up stairs, couldn't walk more then 30 minutes before having to sit down.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Walk, play with my grandson.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I heard a commercial on the TV. I thought this time it might be my salvation.

Describe your experience with getting insurance approval for surgery. What advice, if any, do you have for other people in this stage?

My company includes the coverage under our plan. I met all of the criteria, so I really had no problems with getting approval.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

My stay was wonderful. I felt that the nurses were their for me. I did lose a lot of blood so ended up having to stay in the hospital an extra 2 days. The basics, but since you do have to walk soon after surgery a robe is nice. It is up to you for personal items, I didn't much feel like changing so just used the hospital gowns.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

I lost a lot of blood and had to have transfusions. My arm was so sore from having blood taken that it soon was pretty raw. I wouldn't let them put tape on it. Other than that it was a pretty stay.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I was so excited about having it done that I didn't believe I would have complications. I had a lot of support around me, with the exception of my husband who was the worrywort.

Describe your first few weeks home from the hospital. What should people expect from this period?

I was just very tired having lost all that blood. It took a while to get my strength back. I did what I was told. Because we lived on a slight hill, I started out by walking around in my house. Around the kitchen table through the living room to get my walking in. Then once back at work began walking around in the parking garage. I am up to 2 miles in the parking garage now 5 months later.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

Actually I don't use a group, but do know of two if I felt the need to use it. My husband and my family are know such a part of my success that it is all I need.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

I have 5 little scars from the lap. They are going away as time is going on.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

I had a couple of times not seen weight loss, but I feel that whatever I loss with be such a benefit that I am not worried about it.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

More people acknowledge me, say "Hi". Ask me to do more with groups.
