Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

With all the pains I had, I thought I was doomed if I did and doomed if I didn't. I was in constant pain, my joints, my back and knees. I never over ate. I did let everybody too busy and meals got skipped. I know if I am to succeed, I have to feed my body and give it the fuel it needs to help me do me.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

For me, not being able to play with my son, because I get winded so quickly. Not fitting into the booths at restaurants. Not being able to try on the cute clothes in the stores. The pain and stress it has on my body. Just to name a few.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I enjoy being able to exercise and climb hills with out getting winded. I enjoy being able to get out of bed without rolling to the floor first. I mostly enjoy spending the time with my son and bein active with him.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I first found out about the surgery from my doctor after I had a blood clot in my lung after the birth of my son. My initial impression was very negative and full of fear.

What made you finally decide to have the surgery?

I decided after my son came home and told me that his classmates were teasing him about his "FAT" mom. I do not want him to suffer for something he did not do.

How did you decide which proceedure to have?

I decided on the BPD/DS after watching a program on the Discovery Channel and doing research on my own. In my opinion, the DS has a lot of good points and few bad. I did not want the "dumping syndrome" if I ate sugar. Also, it has the greatest rate of excess weight loss.

What fears did you have about having complications or even dying from from the surgery, and what would you tell other people having the same fears now?

I really do not have fears of complications. I know I can die if I do not do anything and that out weighs the other. I pray and ask God for guidance and protection to do what I need to do to get healthy.
