Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I was overweight since I was in the 4th grade. I was teased forever!!

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

I couldn't move. My social life was non-existant.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Being able to move like a normal person.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

A friend of mine said that a lady at her church had weightloss surgery and I happened to look into it and less than two months later I was having the same thing done.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

It was okay I guess. I was there for 4 days. the hard part was getting up the first couple of times. Man that hurt a lot!!! Most important things to bring for me was anything that made me feel comfortable. A nightgown from home, slippers, blanket....

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

None.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I couldn't stay home alone for the first week. I needed to be around family and friends. My friend Tisha took care of me. I have no family here.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

I didn't have one at all until after I had my son and noticed that something wasn't right after having him. My "TOOL" wasn't the same.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

It's there, but I don't notice it much.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

I think I plateaued once or twice.....didn't last very long. I did work harded to make sure I still lost weight.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

oh yeah!!! I wasn't a fat mess any longer. I wasn't looked down upon.
