CONNIE M.

Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I HAVE BEEN OVER WEIGHT MOST OF MY LIFE. I WAS AN EMOTIONAL EATER. I WOULD EAT WHEN I WAS NOT HUNGRY AND THEN BE MISERABLE. ONCE MY DIABETES WENT OUT OF CONTROL IT SCARED ME MY PCP MENTIONED THE SURGERY AS A TOOL TO HELP ME.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

EVERYTHING BUYING CLOTHES, PEOPLE'S LOOKS, EATING WHEN NOT HUNGRY.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

STILL TO EARLY

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

MY PCP OFFERED THE SURGERY TO ME AS A TOOL. IT TOOK ME TWO YEARS TO FINALLY MAKE MY DECISION. I KEPT WANTING TO DO IT MYSELF. BUT I COUND NOT.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

MY HOSPITAL STAY WAS GREAT. I STAYED TWO NIGHTS. I NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS. MY SURGEON IS GREAT I NEVER HURT OR NEEDED PAIN MEDS. THE PRESCRIPTION I TOOK HOME I NEVER FILLED. I NEVER NEEDED TO BRING ANYTING BECAUSE I RESTED AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, AND REALLY NEVER FELT LIKE DOING ANYTHING AFTER SURGERY UNTIL I WENT HOME.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

NONE

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I FELL TIRED MY SURGERY WAS JUNE 29. I PUSH MYSELF BECAUSE MY DOCTOR SAID TO DO AS MUCH AS I COULD AND WALK AS MUCH AS I CAN. 25 MINUTES TWICE A DAY. NOT EATING FOR TWO WEEKS WAS HARD. IT WAS MORE MENTAL THAN ANYTHING BECAUSE I DID NOT FEEL HUNGRY.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

I HAVE NOT FOUND OUT ABOUT THE SUPPORT GROUP YET, I WILL SOON.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

FIVE SMALL INCISIONS. NOT BAD. HAD NO PROBLEMS. JUST KEEP THEM CLEAN AND CHANGE THE DRESSINGS AS YOUR TOLD.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

STILL TO EARLY

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

NOT YET. BUT EVERYONE AROUND ME IS VERY SUPPORTIVE. I AM NOT TWO WEEKS OUT YET BUT HAVE LOST 18 POUNDS.
