Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

My battle with weight loss was very stressful and energy draining. I was depressed and ill all the time. I sometimes even cried of despair.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Not being able to participate in activities with children. Not being able to play with them. Embarrased to be around people fear that they would laugh and talk about me. Wouldn't like to eat in front of people.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I still am not able to do things yet that I want with it only being 2 weeks after surgery. I know that I will be able to soon. I will comment also on this as my time goes by.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I first hear of the surgery from my aunt Cindy who had the surgery done. At first I was kind of scared because the surgery sounded so dangerous. After thought and pray I knew it was for me.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

My stay in the hospital was great. I didn't have to visit ICU like most patients. I stayed 4 days in the hospital. The most important thing to me that I think everyone should take is a family member or friend to be there with you in your room at all times. I mostly slept because I was so tired. I watched a little tv.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

No complications from the surgery.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I was really nervous and scared. Mostly I had the support group at Trident and family and friends telling me that everything was going to be ok. I also beleive having GOD on my side really helped alot. I would pray to him and ask him to make everything be ok. Some say that ah I don't beleive that but I prayed and I just had a certain peace come over me that everything would be fine.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

I am only 2 weeks post op. I plan to attend the local support group her in my area of Conway SC. I also have my friends and family supporting me.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

My scar to me looks better than what I thought. It has healed nicely and looks ok. It has only been 2 weeks since my surgery.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

I am still figuring those out still kind of early to tell. I will come back and comment later on.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

My sister and mom get worried because they want me to eat. I guess a little more attention now than then but so far with just 2 weeks gone about the same treatment. I'm sure it will change later on. I will comment further as changes take place.
