Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

The more I tried to loose weight the bigger I became. You stop trying after a while because you just get bigger.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Health, energy living life...missing alot because you can't keep up.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

It's only been six weeks so I am just starting to find these things. Like walking farther than I did before.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I heard of the surgery several years ago and thought..ha not me...I can work out and get rid of my weight if i want too. So not true.

Describe your experience with getting insurance approval for surgery. What advice, if any, do you have for other people in this stage?

I didn't have any problems...just took six months.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

Spectrum hospital in Grand Rapids was great. The nurses are awsome. I was there two days, left on the third. I really didn't need much until it was time to leave. Things most important to bring for me was Pj's and a brush.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

Harder to get fluids down. Had some issues with nausia. Just took it slow.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

Kept busy so the time went by faster. Worried about catching a cold but I didn't.

Describe your first few weeks home from the hospital. What should people expect from this period?

My nausia followed me home so I took alittle longer to get up and moving. Walking helps get stronger.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

I am looking for one now

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

Scars are small. Yea I expected this just not seven of them but that is ok too. They are small.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

I went one week where I didn't loose any weight. I think i wasn't getting enough protein in. Makes a big difference.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

People are noticing the fact I am loosing weight.
