Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

Before I learned about Gastric Bypass Surgery. I Struggled with my weight most all my adult life.I weighed 367 lbs. before I had the surgery done.Since I have had the surgery on Sept. 29th 2003 I have had a new outlook on life. I've lost 90 lbs.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

The worst thing to me about being overwieght was that you don't feel like getting out and doing anything and if you do go out anywhere places are limited . For instance I didn't ever want to go to the movies with anyone because I was afraid that I wouldn't fit in the chairs. The same with going out to eat I wasn't able to do much with my family or friends that they wanted to do.I felt so ashamed of my self.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Spending more quality time with my family and friends.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I first heard about Bariatric Surgery from different people that had already had the surgery. My first impression of it was NOWAY would I ever do that. I thought that I wanted to live to take care of my kids I wasn't ever gonna take a chance like that. BUT....................

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

My stay in the hospital was very nice. Everyone was exeptionally kind and took very good care of me

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

No Problems!!!

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I was fairly nervous about the surgery its self. But I decided to turn it over to the Lord and let him take care of it for me .So I knew that if anything happened that it was meant to happen.Praise Jesus!!

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

Well I don't go to a support group because I have so many friends that I've always got someone to talk to.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

I have 5 very small Incisions about an inch long apiece. They are as small as my scars from my Gallbladder surgery.
