Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

It's caused a great deal of unhappiness as well as depression. I have always felt so sad about my appearance and even more so when my children started making comments to me about it. I feel so bad that I am not able to do a lot of things that they ask because of my weight.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Treatment from the public as well as the pains that I experience.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

now....living life compared to almost dying from complications!

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I learned a lot about it when my best friend decided to have the surgery. Now that she has gone through it, she has offered a lot of advice.

What was your first visit with your surgeon like? How can people get the most out of this meeting?

It was informational.

What made you finally decide to have the surgery?

after getting approval from the insurance company

How did you decide which proceedure to have?

was only one available at the time of my decision and that was the gastric bypass

What fears did you have about having complications or even dying from from the surgery, and what would you tell other people having the same fears now?

I almost did die from the complications from having had the gastric bypass. Ended up having two revisions, lived 7 months on a feeding tube, almost died, referred to Mayo and all but 10 mL of stomach was removed due to extensive damage!

How did your family and friends react to your decision? Would you have communicated anything differently if you could now? How supportive were they after your surgery?

Was pleased at the beginning. But now, they wish that I would have never had it done after they have watched me come so close to dying from the complications.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

I did~MANY MANY complications!!!! Read profile update on April 17th for most recent news

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

NONE....doubt that it would have helped after all that I Had to go through!!!

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

NOW....my whole abdomen is covered with MANY MANY scars!

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

Oh yea
