Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I have struggled with my weight since my teenage years and it has only gotten worse as I get older. I have taken it off and put it back on so many times that I finally reached a point that I didn't want to try anymore because I knew I would fail. I feel like this is my last hope...

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

I get out of breath tying my shoes...it is hard to put on socks...getting down on the floor is nearly impossible

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I now am a personal trainer and own my own gym! I love exercise and being in shape and empowering others to get healthy.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

Well initially, I read about it in a health magazine about the adjustable band....it sounded so logical and a perfect answer to my prayers....then I found out that my insurance would only cover RNY so that is what I will have but I think I would probably try the band if it were approved by my insurance

Describe your experience with getting insurance approval for surgery. What advice, if any, do you have for other people in this stage?

I had no problem since I had documentation of being in Weight Watchers for several years and a number of other things tried.

What made you finally decide to have the surgery?

reading all the information and profiles on the internet.

How did you decide which proceedure to have?

Insurance made my decision for me

What fears did you have about having complications or even dying from from the surgery, and what would you tell other people having the same fears now?

I don't have fears about dying or even complications as much as I fear it not working for me and gaining all my weight back....it would really suck to be fat AND have half a stomach...

How did your employer/supervisor react to your decision? What did you tell him/her? How long were you out of work?

I am a stay at home mom so this doesn't apply
