Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

The feeling of being alone. Never really being able to fit it. Not being able to go into a "normal" store to purchase clothes, shoes, etc. Afraid to go to amusement parks because I didn't fit into the seats of the rides. NEVER feeling happy about myself, not being able to answer the question...how did i allow myself to get like this.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

My health was failing.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

walking, tying my shoes, and being able to cleanse myself thoroughly, and fit in the bathtub, and actually being able to get out without a tow truck.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

My cardiologist suggested it, and my initial impressions was " I dont need that, i can lose the weight if i want to" My defense was way up there. Until my Dr. told me i would see my son grow up. And when discussing it with my son, (15 at the time) and he said "mom i want you around when i grow up" I made my phone call the next day to my cardiologist and asked "how do i get started"

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

My hospital stay was, intimidating. Not all, but some of the workers made comments about how heavy the bed was that they had to push, and they would need several people to help them. I was in hospital for 6 days, and most importantly, bring a fan, and slip on slippers, and baggy night gown and bathrobe.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

No, Thank GOD. I researched everything i could about the upcoming life change. Talked to people on line, and followed EVERY word the Dr. said to do. If he said to jump on one foot and bark like a dog, i did it. They know best. When you feel better, DONT go back to old habits. They will cause problems. Remember why you had it done in the first place.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I felt great. Scared, happy, healthier, and thinner. I knew it was a long journey, (for the rest of my life) but thank God i will have a lengthier life due to the life change.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

I had a local support group, and on line. It is very important and helpful. Long after surgery, you must remember you will never be the same. On the outside as well as on the inside. Stay in touch with other wls patients.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

I had laproscopic. Next to all my stretch marks from being so heavy, you dont see the scars at all. I did expect scaring, but being so overweight, that scared worse. Emotionally, and physically.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

Plateaus are a bummer. Dont let that discourage you. Everyone has them. Always remember..its okay to see the scale remain on the same number for a while, but dont let it climb.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

Oh yes, its weird , men actually look at me with respect and not disgust. Children no longer laugh and point. I can walk my dog without feeling like i am going to die or wanting to because of the mockery.
