Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

My weight is constantly up and down. I'd lose 10, gain 3, lose 20, gain 30 and so on and so forth. To say I was depressed sounds mopey, but it's true. Every 6 months I would have to change clothes and get new ones because nothing fit anymore. It was a constant dreaded feeling in the back of my mind at all times. And I lost a lot of self respect for myself because of it.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Not being able to do the things that I so desperately want to do. I'm always concerned if activities are going to be able to work for me, something as simple as going to a movie theater and being able to fit in the seats. It's something I always think about when I go out in public.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I enjoy doing anything and everything! Trying new things or doing things I haven't been able to do in 10 plus years feels amazing! I have a new lease on life and it's so much fun to just finally be myself and not worry about my weight anymore.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

My friend got the surgery about 4 years ago and did great with it. At the time, I waited a couple years and decided to try and pursue it. Then I realized that the timing for the 6 monh course I had to go through to see the surgeon was not right for me. I had to wait another year, and now, here I am, done with the required 6 month process and I will be meeting with the surgeon very soon.
