Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

My weight loss struggle has been hard. I put on my weight when I was 17 and pregnant with my son. During my pregnancy I went from 138 lbs. to 215 lbs. And just went up even higher since then. When I would diet it seemed like it made me hungrier and crave food more! And exercise has been hard also.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

For me, is not being able to find clothes, and people staring at me.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I had my surgery, 1 yr. later I had lost 120 pounds, I could find clothes that fit, cute bras, I could cross my legs!! I felt soooo good about myself. I had a baby 2 yrs. after surgery and i gained 60 pounds back, trying my best to lose it again, it is hard.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I first heard of it on TV, and I thought it was too dangerous and that I would never be able to do it, until I started looking into the lapband.

What was your first visit with your surgeon like? How can people get the most out of this meeting?

At my first meeting with my surgeon he showed a slide show and explained all the different wls. Then he met with everyone one on one, he was very nice and informative.

What made you finally decide to have the surgery?

My health, I want to be here to see my son grow up, I want to be able to do things with my family without getting too tired.

How did you decide which proceedure to have?

I decided on the lapband because it is not as invasive as the gastric bypass.

How did your family and friends react to your decision? Would you have communicated anything differently if you could now? How supportive were they after your surgery?

Everyone has been very supportive with my decision.
