Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I had been over weight as a child and carried it into adulthood and hated what i saw in the mirror on a daily basis and hated myself but tried to keep those feelings hidden from my family, and knowing well if I can't LOVE ME, then I truely can't love anyone else

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

I was teased as a child , and as an adult, and I still have sensitive issues about my weight.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Going to amusement parks and riding in the seats of rides that I was too afraid to even try to ride on because I knew I would't be able to fit or close the latch, and that one day I will be able to take my 2 boys back to Orlando to Diney World and ride something with thm, My oldest is Autistic and is 15 and the youngest is 11 years old, I ruin their vacation from being over weight.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

Believe it or not I saw it on the Sally Jesse Raphael Show. I was astunded

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

MY stay was 3 days I went in on Easter weekend the friday before that holiday, and I came home the monday after, bring toothpaste, and a large robe and comfy slippers with rubber soles.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

I have had no complications, but after they came to help me walk, I could not feel my leggs for hours, I thought I was paralized, but the anesthesiologist had the needles too far in my spine, and with a little adjustment, the feeling came in.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I felt excited, overjoyed, and just relieved, I just kept saying the "little girl will finally get to come out and play".

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

I no longer go to aftercare support group, all I kept hearing was the same people getting up telling their same story.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

The scar is from below the breast bone to the top of my belly button, and yes I did expect the scar, I felt it was an even trade, this christmas will be 2 years since the tummy tuck that my hmo paid for and I hjave a scar from it which doesn't bother me , because before that I had a partial hysterectomy.Blue cross/ Blue shield HMO is my insurance carrier who paid for the tummy tuck, and Atena paid for the Open Roux-en Y gastric bypass.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

I have plateau from 305 t0 190 and I walk 2 miles daily 5 days a week and nothing is coming off any more I guess its just REDUNDANT SKIN!!!!!

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

yes, But I don't mind, because I am now smaller than them, you know the "TEASERS", but I will never do them that way.
