Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I have had both the problems of being to thin and too overweight. I started out for many years being thin cause I didn't want to eat and then as I grew older and got pregnant I never lost my weight and I just kept gaining. It was always very emotional for me more so being overweight then under weight.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

People laugh at you and they act like you shouldn't exist in the world. You can't have relationships because noone wants someone overweight so it's very lonely. My family always put me down.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

exercising, walking better, getting in and out of bed easier. being able to fit in a chair easier and getting up easier but I still have a ways to go

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

A friend of mine told me about it three years ago but I didn't want it at the time cause I was too scared.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

It was a very scary experience for me for the first three months because I had to spend it in the hospital and intensive care. robes, slippers, personal care products, puzzles, books, clothes for when you leave.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

yes. I didn't deal to well I cried all the time and was sick from morning till night. I dehissed and kept getting fevers and ended up in intensive care.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

At first for awhile I wished that I never had the surgery but six months later I'm glad I did but your body goes through a lot of changes. I had to take meds for my anxiety.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

well I am just really starting with this I think I will go to this hospital that has a support group. I think it will be very important to talk with others that went through the same things that I have gone through

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

they are noticeable but I knew I would have one and I have to have surgery again to remove a hernia

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

some people but not my family because they expect to much
