Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

My weight was a constant source of depression for me. It caused me to become quite introverted.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Dealing with "outsiders" - people who have never had to deal with it...they treat you like you have an extra appendage or something.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Walking, going to the movies, hugging my fiance and him being able to get his arms all the way around me.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

news/media and I didn't think anyone should go that far. Then I met people who had had it done and realized what a lifesaver it is...

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

Surgery was Monday morning, and I went home Wednesday morning. The stay was ok. I don't care for hospitals, but my mom was with me, so I was ok. Most important thing to bring - 2 piece pajamas and a fanny pack if your doc uses a drainage tube.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

none

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I was excited. There was no anxiety. I had complete faith in my doctor. I knew I was in good hands, so I left the anxiety up to those who love me. I just kept a positive attitude, which came in handy those first few days after surgery

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

I use the online FACES support group and real life FACES support group @ MCE. Its a major help. You have people in various stages of the process to talk to.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

so far, my "war wounds" are healing well.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

None...

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

Yeah...i perceive strangers to be less judgemental...
