Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

It was a constant battle. I would lose, then gain. I was pushing myself to a diabetic life style, heart attack, high blood pressure. I was in constant self awareness. Worried others were always making fun of me. Little children would often horrify their parents when they saw me.....kids are so honest.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

People view you differently. Just because you eat alot doesnt mean your stupid!

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Cross my legs! I cannot wait to get on a roller coaster this summer.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

A friend of mine had it done. Was aprehensive at first.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

My nurses were WONDERFUL! I was there for 3 days. I came home on the 3rd day. The most important thing I felt to bring, was extra pillows, housecoat and house slippers, that slip on.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

No complications, just soreness.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I was scared, excited, scared, excited, it was a real roller coaster. I went to obesityhelp.com and asked many questions. I talked to people I know that had it done. I prayed alot.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

My family as well as monthly meetings. As well as obesityhelp.com

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

I had 6 incisions. I expected worse. The lower left incision is pretty clear, however the others have pretty much faded. Just look like a small scratch

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

Yes, men expecially. They actually talk to me.
