Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

Being big didn't really bother me until my health problems and pain set in. I always had high self esteem. I didn't really bother what others thought even though I've always cared for others. It was only when my health and quality of life began to rapidly fail I decided on WLS. I believe many people can be larger than he Insurance charts and Fashion and Entertainment industries say is ideal and still be happy and healthy.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

The Only bad things associated with being huge were health problems, pain, exhaustion, lack of energy, depression and anxiety and feeling discrimination and judgement. The good part is that I now know in my heart, mind soul and spirit what it feels like to be hated and discriminated against. I know what it feels like to stand at an ATM and have a car load of inbred rednecks ride by and scream obscenities and hatred at you.I know how it feels to be grateful to God that I was not able to catch up with them in the traffic. I know what it feels like to be bypassed for career opportunities because I was different even though I was clearly the most qualified. I think I know what it feels like to be a minority or have an alternate life style or even be emotionally or mentally challenged. If I had my life to live over, I wouldn't change anything, because I am glad I can feel and understand, sympathize and empathize Cgreen

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

On August 11, 2003, I was roughly five and a half feet tall, weighed almost 400 lbs. and had a BMI around 60. I had a RNY gastric bypass with Dr. Daly at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, GA. I have lost over 200 lbs and had it off for almost 10 years. I feel much better. In my uneducated opinion, Maybe I am biased, but I think the RNY is the BEST WLS and Dr. John Paul Daly of Northside is the best surgeon and Dr. Paul Macik at Northside and Dr. Edward Lin at Emory Midtown are also AWESOME and EXCELLENT JMHO PS.Just my Opinion, but I would advise my friends and family to steer clear of the Atlanta Medical Center and beware of the Little Wrestler at Emory Johns Creek. PPS. I understand Piedmont Hospital now has bariatric surgery. They did not have it when I had my surgery. If I were doing it now, I would research and give them serious consideration especially since my Excellent PCP, Dr. Gonzalez, is affiliated with Piedmont Hospital. BOTTOM LINE. Research and Interview your prospective surgeons. ALSO. Attend support groups and listen to others. Now that the ALB and Sleeve are becoming so popular, a lot of RNY's, including me, stopped going to irrelevant support groups. I think I might want to start a RNY specific support group with DS'es. I think RNY's may have more in common with DS'es that with ALB or Sleeve.
