Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

My whole family is bigger, I was always a bigger girl. a size 14/16 in high school. I had 2 kids one at 18 one at 27 and shortly afterwards life went down hill. I got a divorce, lost custody of my kids for a short time, My mother ( my best friend) passed away from cancer. I met and married a wonderful man but my weight kept climbing. I got an office job and became more and more immobile.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

When I realized I was at my worst was my grandson's 2nd birthday. We had it at the beach and I was unable to walk and play with him and my other grandson and daughter. The looks I would get when I had to ride in an eclectic cart at wal-mart, The shame I felt when trying to look good for my husband and knowing I wasn't

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

.WALK! Just a simple walk around a store, or the block.

My best friend had it and I support anything to help improve health and self esteem.

Describe your experience with getting insurance approval for surgery. What advice, if any, do you have for other people in this stage?

Just have lots of patience it takes time.

What was your first visit with your surgeon like? How can people get the most out of this meeting?

In a group. I cried. ask lots of questions.

of course dying, Pain, I had a hysterectomy in 2001 and it was very painful afterward

How did your family and friends react to your decision? Would you have communicated anything differently if you could now? How supportive were they after your surgery?

very supportive before and will continue to be. my best friend and daughter in law can't wait to shop with me

How did your employer/supervisor react to your decision? What did you tell him/her? How long were you out of work?

They didn't I work at home and really do not have face to face contact with them.

What was it like attending your first information seminar on weight loss surgery? Were you glad you attended? if so, why?

I went the first time with my best friend so when It came time to have the surgery I had done it all with her.
