Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I went from 340 lbs ( in 2013 when I started the year long journey to get approved for surgery) 296 LBS the day of surgery to 124 LBS now. I have had a hard time with my mental health in the 19 months that have gone by. It is hard for me, as I would think it would be for anyone in this situation. What I find hard is the people that are around that could not be bothered to know my name when I was bigger let alone talk to me now refer to me ( to my face ) as skinny, bones and even will tell me to eat a burger. It is hard enough on someone going through this journey without the insensitive comments . I have had to rely on my support system for their positive support, so that I wont find myself lost in the insensitive mindset that is around in the public.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

I would say that the worst thing for me was watching life rather than living it. I have three amazing children and a loving husband, and felt that I was making them miss out on a mommy and wife. One of my children is disabled and it was so hard to take care of myself let alone be as hands on as he needed. Going to the doctors and meetings would take everything that I had to give. At the end of the day I was in pain from head to toe. My bones hurt from the load that they had to carry around. Not to mention that I would get winded from a standard set of stairs.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I had my surgery on 04/10/2014 , I can remember the first time that my knee did not hurt from walking!!! The first time that I was able to cross my legs! The first time that I was able to walk into a non big girl store to get a shirt and not walk out in tears because I could not find anything in my size. By far the best thing for me was the first hike that I was able to take with my husband and children. I was 6 months out and around 240 LBS. ( 100 lbs total loss and 56 LBS down from the day of surgery ) I was able to hike a rather steep cliff with out much trouble. I cried to see the pride that my family had because of the fact that I was able to join them. I was filled with pride for myself due to being able to finally live life and not just watch it.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I had seen a commercial on tv. I thought that it was worth looking into.

Describe your experience with getting insurance approval for surgery. What advice, if any, do you have for other people in this stage?

I did not have a problem getting a approval. It took me a few extra months to complete what was required because I had a lot of other pressing things going on. I have a child with Cerebral Palsy, Autism and Tourettes. ( just the tip of the iceberg ) So I was in and out of the Dr, with him.

What was your first visit with your surgeon like? How can people get the most out of this meeting?

I went to a seminar before I was able to meet with the Dr. He went over all of the options that I had. He was more than willing to answer any and all questions that had been asked. The first time that I was in the office it was much of the same. More information and willingness to answer any questions that I had.

How did you decide which proceedure to have?

What fears did you have about having complications or even dying from from the surgery, and what would you tell other people having the same fears now?
