Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

Horrible, I would try my hardest to stay on a diet, make one tiny little mistake and than punish myself for that mistake to the extreme. Than cry over the whole thing and just feel like a complete loser!!

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

The way people treated me, oh you are so pretty it is such a shame you are so fat, why dont you do something about it?

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Eating like a normal person, not living to eat but eating to live. Sitting in a chair and feeling "tiny" and not "spilling" out over it.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

Carnie Wilson on the front of people magazine. I was interested but scared to death as I was just diagnosed with M.S. and did not want to push or put my body through anything it may not be able to handle.

Describe your experience with getting insurance approval for surgery. What advice, if any, do you have for other people in this stage?

Have ALOT of patience!! Keep calling and keep track of all of those phone calls, dates, times and names.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

I had a great stay in the hospital. My onky problem was I had a reaction to a certain drug that made me throw up for a couple of hours and once they figured that out I was good to go, literally!!

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

no, I had none.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

The first week I was excited, by the second week that wore off and I was depressed thinking I could never eat what I wanted ever again. That has taken a long time to deal with and that food is not my friend or emotional support groupie

Describe your first few weeks home from the hospital. What should people expect from this period?

Some soreness, you cant expect to come home a go straight back to your normal routine, (gym, running,etc...) take it slow give your body time to recover and adjust. Not months but at least a week or two!!

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

My doctor sent me to the one I went to and then I saw a nutrionist a couple of times also. Also my doctor told me about a website for post op patients. They have been very helpful, specially when I feel like I have not lost enough or I am still fat

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

my scars are very small and not at all what I expected!!

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

I hit plateaus all the time, my longest was for 3 weeks and it can be very frusterating!!

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

YES!!! I see and notice men looking at me!! I have not had that for a few years and boys, I was getting worried!!
