Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I would always yo yo diet. One min i would be eating as good as could be the next min id be shoveling junk food down my throat. When i was stressed out i ran to food to comfort me. When i was upset i would run to food to support me, food was my friend it wouldnt hurt me or let me down. It was always in reach when needed

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

The worst part about being over weight was being over look. Jobs, People, just in general. People are cruel in this world. I'd go out to eat and id feel like everyone was waiting to see what the "fat" girl had on her plate. Its an emotional toll on someone when they dont love themself and they just need alittle push and its not there..but food was.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Getting back into my size 24 jeans was the most thrilling thing so far for me!! and Fitting into a resturant booth and having plenty of room to move around!!!

What made you finally decide to have the surgery?

What made me finally have the surgery was the fact i was tired of being over weight and tired of not living my life. Im 25 years old and held myself back from everything. I wouldnt go out to eat because what if the booths weren't big enough, wouldnt go on rollercoster cuz the seat belt wouldnt fit. Just the small things that others take for granted i couldnt do. Now its time to be able to do all that stuff and live my life as someone who is 25 would.

What fears did you have about having complications or even dying from from the surgery, and what would you tell other people having the same fears now?

Its a very risky surgery but i was already dying inside. I made a choice to live and this was my only change to survive this battle of being overweight. I took the risk to be happy and im glad i did it. If i had to i'd do it all over again!

How did your family and friends react to your decision? Would you have communicated anything differently if you could now? How supportive were they after your surgery?

My mom was very supportive. My father and brother were not they were afraid of the complications. After the surgery was over and now that im losing weight im 5 weeks out and down 28lbs my dad has never been more proud of me. They helped me survive my fight. I wouldnt be where i am today without them and thier support!

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

I've been getting more looks now that im down 50lbs. Its amazing how much ppl will talk to me now and actually comment on how good i look. Its pretty scary that the same person that was 50lbs heavier is still the same funny cute girl now! and they missed out on that all these years of getting to know me.
