Today is 9/9/01. Three years ago yesterday I had my open RNY done at Centennial Hospital in Nashville. It all seems like a dream now. I remember going into sugery being placed into position on the operating table and suddenly got so scared that I cried! Fortunately, my sugeon was very reassuring and said "You're going to be just fine" then said "put her under". The mask when over my mouth and nose and I was told to inhale deeply, which I did, after which I could see only total darkness for a second and then I was out. I woke up with a mega sore tummy and in an uncomfortable position. I kept asking for soemthing for pain and when the nurses said it OK, they gave me morphine and I felt fine again. I took morphine for a couple of days nad then graduated to pills before I was discharged from the hospital in 4 days. I was 45 at the time of my surgery, so my body took a while to recover and bounce back. I guess it was 6 or 8 weeks before I was fully up to speed again. Would I do it over agin if given a choice? ABSOLUTELY! It is without question the best decision I ever made in my life! I weighed 288 3 years ago and today I weigh 135! I wear a size 10 and enjoy life! I have kidney and heart disease, but they are easier to manage now that I'm thinner. I can walk (without making tha "swishing" sound, too)and do things I never thought possible. I work weekends in a mall store and work another job through the week so I've worked 7 days a week now for over a year. My mall job requires standing. Before I couldn't even shop for two hours let alone work on my feet for 8 hours, but now I can manage it just fine! Life for me is altogether different and last night I said a special prayer to thank God for the surgery the saved my life. My surgeon, Dr. Hershcel Graves, is now retired, but I make it a point to send him a thank you note and updated information every year around his birthday. In addition to God, I owe that man my life! I urge anyone who is considering this surgery to check it out, find out all the facts, consider the risks of having the surgery versus the risks of continued obesity, and then make your decision! If ever I can help anyone, please feel free to e-mail me. My best wishes to all of you who have suffered as I have from a lifetime of obesity and long to be "free".
