I was told by my doctor that yes you can stretch your pouch by gulping. I too have a hard time with sipping. I am not sure how much it will stretch but I just try my best.

I couldn't sip either until I got a teaspoon and drank my water one spoon at a time. Within a week I was able to sip from a glass and not drink too much. Hope this helps.

Try using a straw and sipping slowly. I really don't think anyone can stretch their pouch by gulping. But, if you gulp you can fill up and that will make you feel very uncomfortable. Slow sips through a straw worked for me.

According to my surgeon, you don't have to worry about gulping stetching the pouch. I've been gulping (sometimes) since about three weeks post-op. I also tried the straw thing. It works fine for most drinks, but in my opinion the only way to drink water is to gulp. Occasionally, I do get a little pain in my chest if I drink TOO fast. Just my humble opinion.

If gulping doesn't cause you pain, you might not be doing much harm. I find that if I really gulp, I get a lump feeling that is quite painful. However, I have found a bit of a happy medium. I let the water trickle down my throat so I almost get the feeling of actually drinking. It is very hard to sip, partly because it doesn't seem to quench the thirst. Keep practicing, it gets easier.
