Question:
I have a upper GI test to take

how disgusting is the mix i have to drink before they x-ray me? im so scared of throwing it up because of the nasty taste i have heard, do they make it in differant flavors?    — [Anonymous] (posted on July 2, 2001)

I had an upper GI last year, unrelated to wls. I too dreaded the taste because of what I've heard, but it wasn't so bad. And it was not a huge amount, maybe 8 ozs if I recall correctly. Don't think they offered more than one 'flavor', but it was fine, and believe me, I gag and vomit at the SMELL of nasty stuff! It was fine.

It depends. How much do you hate drinking thick chalky things like Malox and Pepto. I HATE THEM! They gag me every time. If I can drink the barium you definately can. You also have to drink a little dixie cup of Alka Seltzer type liquid. Just count your blessings. My surgeon made me have a lower GI as well. You don't even want to know the horrors of that. However, it was all worth it because now I am 4 months post-op and down 85 lbs.

No one likes the taste of the 'milkshake'... so the techs are good at getting you to drink it with as little fanfare as possible. The stuff I had to drink was cherry and yes it wasnt delicious or anything but you have to drink it. It was cold and there was a thick plastic straw in the bottle so you can suck it down into the back of your throat. The worst thing you can do is be weenie about it and sip it and stop and start again because then you are swishing it around your whole mouth and you will really taste it. Once you start sucking it down DONT STOP until you are done with it! It isnt that bad, it really isnt.
