Question:
What type of snacks do you eat on during the day?

I'm almost 7 months post-op and find myself wanting to nibble on a couple bytes of chips. What are you guys eating that healthy, but also curves your cravings?    — Snowflake_Princess (posted on September 22, 2003)

I am allergic to nuts but cheese is good. Be wary of startng to graze, eating a little bit all day long. Thats realy bad. Your better off to not snack or imit it to a particul;ar time daily.

Trisha, Now that I'm 3 years out, I pretty much snack on what I want. But when I was in the first 18 months, I tried to focus my snacking on protein. So I liked Peanuts (24g of protein in a 2oz bag) and Beef Jerky (high protein, lo-fat, lo-carb). I know, Peanuts are high fat and high salt (I didn't really care). But Beef Jerky really has no down side. Plus it allows you to satisfy that "chewing need". I also agree, you don't want to substitute snacks for "real meals". For many, finger foods are dangerous because they are so easy to keep nearby and eat throughout the day. Try to keep them on some semblance of a schedule. Good luck, Kevin

I agree with the others about not letting snacking get out of control. I plan one snack a day, in the late afternoon. I take that snack into consideration when I count my protein and calories for the day: it's not "extra". I highly recommend doing the same. I snack on 1/4 cup of nuts or soy nuts, 2 oz cheese, 1/4 cup of sesame sticks (a bit high in fat, but with a fair amount of protein), a 4 oz container of yogurt, a piece of deli ham (about an ounce), a boiled egg, 1/2 a protein bar... You get the idea. I always have a protein-based snack. I know that if I start to get into the habit of eating refined carbs for snacks that I will graze, and get cravings that will be too hard to control, and will overeat. Protein based snacks fill me up, and don't lead to other bad habits, at least for me.

I semi-agree with the rest. Don't want to mimic my "old ways". That said, I am only 7 weeks and my pouch fills too quickly. Very hard to get my protein in. I have two PLANNED snacks each day and they are protein. Either a low-fat motzerella stick (string cheese) or 1/2 cup edamame (soybeans). The soybeans are crunchy and since they are small like M&Ms, you can pop them in your mouth one by one while you are working, etc. I don't crave the physical act of snacking but if I did, this would solve the problem. Anymore, my philosophy is "if it's not protein, I don't waste my time/space on it"

I snack but do it on a semi-schedule. And I try to snack only on protein foods even though I occasionally do have something I shouldn't like a few chips or a handful of popcorn. I try to limit my snacks to protein bars, nuts, jerky (a favorite), cheese (especially pepper jack) or fruit with peanut butter. I love a few apple slices with peanut butter spread on them - better for me than crackers and peanut butter.

My new favorite snack is Soy Beans (Edamame). I get them frozen fresh at the Asian Market. Some grocers carry them too. You boil them for about 8-10 minutes in VERY salty water. You can eat them hot or cold and just pop them out of their shell and eat the delicious bean. The bean inside gets some of the salt but not too much and it tastes absolutely delicious, almost a buttery, salty flavor and....drum roll please....one cup has 12.1 grams of protein! Of course, one cup of the soy bean pods only equals maybe 1/4 cup of actual beans but they still pack a whopping 12 grams of protein. When I crave veggies and/or when I crave salty stuff, I reach for the soy bean. LOVE THEM!

When I get that crunching-craving, I will nibble on a few pork rinds (hey, they have no carbs, have some protein and make you lose your appetite once you realize what it is you're eating!) or a couple of pickle slices.

My favorite that I take to work with me for my desk is beef jerky. I use kitchen shears and cut up a serving of it into small bite sized pieces and put it in a zip-lock snack bag. That way I know how much I'm getting and it's easy to handle. My other favorite is Sugar Free Popsicle-brand popsicles.

My favorite snack is fat free cheese slices. You can get em in american or cheddar and they are a quick good snack. By the way, each slice has 5 g of protein, so a great way to get alittle extra of that. ~Open RNY 5/9/2003 -93 pounds!

As I am to get in 5 or 6 meals a day My snacks are usually pretty healthy. If I am getting plenty of protein I balance with a few snow peas, baby carrots, apple slices w/ peanut butter, celery sticks with peanut butter. a few nuts, for a salty crunchy snack. If I am running low on protein a small detour bar, or a new snack i found at walmart, Atkins protien chips. yummy crunchy, and high protein!
