Question:
HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE HAD THE BAND? SLIPPAGE PROBLEMS?
I HAD JUST DECIDED TO HAVE THE BAND WHEN MY DR RECOMMENDED BYPASS. I'VE BEEN PRE APPROVED BY MY INSURANCE AND HAVE MADE MY PRE OP APPT'S. DR SAID HIGH CHANCE OF SLIPPAGE WITH THE BAND. NOW I'M CONFUSED AS TO WHICH SURGERY WOULD BE BETTER. ANY ADVICE OR COMMENTS? THANK YOU — Gina R. (posted on January 13, 2003)

I have only had the band for a little over three months with no problems at
all. I don't know statistics on slippage but I do not recall this being a
big problem. I know that it is a risk but with every WLS there are risks.
Please research this yourself and get more than one doctors opinion on more
than one surgery. This is not a decision to be taken lightly or to be
taken on one doctors word. Research is your best friend in all of this,
please do it. I wish you the best no matter what you decide and if you
have any questions about the band please ask me.

My sister had the band 5/02 and is down almost 90 pounds. She said they
fixed the slippage problem and she personally has not had any problems.

The biggest reason I would lean toward the RNY is that with the band you
don't get malabsorption (which to me was key to long-term success) and you
don't stop the production of Ghrelin (a hormone that causes us to eat more
and gain weight. you can read more about this at
http://www.gastricbypass.com/ghrelin.htm That said, whichever surgery you
chose the success of it is MUCH higher than diet alone and you have to live
with it - so GOOD LUCK to you!

Band slippage, fills, etc combined with nobody in my area familiar with the
band or any of these issues led me to quickly dismiss the idea of doing
this. I didn't want to be stuck in a self pay situation of having an item
in my body and nobody to care for me in my own area. Also the fear of it
rubbing or cutting into the stomach layers (as I understood it can) really
bothered me. Its best to really research all types of surgeries well and
make the best decision for you. Afterall, you're the one who will have to
live with it.
