Question:
How long do we stay on liquids?

Every doc is different, and you should follow their orders. I don't understand why there are so many varieties. I HAD to eat a solid before being discharged. We only had to abstain from meats, salads, and items with a casing(corn, peas) for 4-6 weeks and introduce them when we became comfortable with these items. Everyone seems to do great on this plan. I actually had steak at one week, and turkey (Thanksgiving) at 3 weeks post-op and did great. I know, I didn't follow orders. Tisk-tisk.

My doctor has us on 6 weeks of modified liquids/pureed. I'm a couple of days short of 6 weeks. I've stuck with the plan about 95% having had some soft solids after a few weeks. So far I haven't had any trouble with any food. I've dumped twice, on OJ so I am no longer drinking that. I eat very few carbs and stay away from sugar completely and I plan to stick to that indefinitely. I'm looking forward to having more choices of foods to eat.

i was on nothing the day after surgery, liquids the 2nd day after & pureed the day of discharge. i am on purees for 6 weeks & have 1 1/2 more weeks to go. but i cheat. my drs orders r eat whatever u want but puree it. well i have added some things to my diet that cant be pureed well, shrimp, fish, & string cheese. so i chew chew chew them to death & have no problems with them. i stay away from sugar, fats & carbs as they make me dump. dumping will certainly keep u disciplined!!! not a good feeling AT ALL! lol. i drink water constantly & carry a water bottle with me whenever i leave the house. good luck to u!!!

I'm another one of those BAD people who didn't follow their dr's orders 'to the letter'.. Christmas Dinner was at my families' house 2 weeks after surgery.. and there was NO way I was gonna miss out on that! I had ham (didn't set well.. haven't tried it since) turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, a roll. OK.. so the total was about 1 bite of each.. but I made sure I chewed the heck out of it.. and REALLY enjoyed my Christmas Dinner..! Everyone is different.. and surgeons all have different 'plans'. The nutitionist wasn't very happy when I told her what I'd been eating.. but I felt this way: If I know that I'm chewing it till it all but dissolves, and I keep away from excess fats, added sugars - and shoot for higher protein, and if my tummy feels fine with it.. then it must be ok for ME. May not necessarily be that way for others. I say: stay in tune with your body.. and it will tell you when something is right.. or WRONG.!!
