Question:
Help me decide if this is dumping, or should I call my surgeon.

Yesterday I ate 3 bites of bacon at lunch and then for dinner I ate 3 bites of chicken, 1 bite of potato salad, 1 bite of baked beans and 1/2 small slice of tomato. I was fine until about 1 hour after dinner. I got deathly nauseated but couldn't throw up. I have never been so sick. I never had abdominal or intestinal cramping, but just hurt in the pouch area and sever nausea. It lasted over 2 hours. When I tried to lay down it hurt worse. Any ideas? Is this my form of dumping, or could it be more serious? I was too sick to go to the emergency room...just wanted to die. (I am 2 months post-op Lap. RNY) THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!    — Rhonda H. Sounds more like food getting stuck. If it continues to happen, you may have a narrowed stoma.

I agree, it sounds like food getting stuck. Make sure you chew tomato skins thoroughly as that thin skin can block the exit from your pouch. Relax when you eat, don't drink with your meal.

I know exactly the feeling you are describing. I just want to die when it happens to me--you are lucky it only lasted 2 hours mine lasted for 12 hours and I did end out in the emergency room. I drove there myself vomiting and driving at the same time! I had an upper GI there wasn't any narrowing of the opening. I have been taking two meds that have helped-- Sucrafate and Metoclopramide. These meds are for ulcers and GERD. I was never so sick in my entire life! Good Luck

I have experienced similar problems from the foods you listed. I am one year post-op and still suffer from terrible gas/bloating/diarrhea if I eat bacon, anything with mayonnaise like potato salad, and/or beans. If I ate all three of those on the same day, like you did, I would be terribly ill too. I do try and eat beans occasionally, because I love them and they are such good fiber, but I know I will pay for it with cramping an hour or two after eating. I try to avoid salads with mayo completely...it just isn't worth the pain (and vomitting. It seems the worst vomitting is from mayonnaise.) And bacon...I've said adios and good riddance to bacon forever! I'm not sure if it is the high fat content or the pork, but both make me dump big time and it just isn't even worth it to me to experiment with bacon. So...if I make BLT's at home, I'll have mine without the bacon, and please hold the mayonnaise. No beans or potato salad on the side, and oh yeah...better make mine without the bread, I still can't tolerate more than a bite or two of bread. But I'm not complaining! I'm getting used to my new style of eating. Good thing I like vegetables and chicken. It sounds as if you and I may have similar "food sensitivies". Please email me if you want to talk more about what to avoid to feel good. I hope you are getting enough protein.
