Question:
How many inches is typically considered for proximal or distral?
My Dr. plans to bypass about 100 cm. trying to figure out if that is proximal or distal? — Mel M. (posted on July 2, 2001)

My doctor advised that for a proximal you will have 130 inches left. A
medial will between 70-100. A distal will leave you 60 inches left. That
is the amount left to absorb food. I am not sure if this is standard
across the board or not.

A 100cm limb would be considered a proximal. The cut off point for a
proximal/distal is 150cm. Some people also refer to 120-150cm as a medial.
I have heard alot of argument on this subject and you probably can find
several questions and answers in the library of this site regarding this.

There is no standard for proximal and distal lengths. Each surgeon has
his/her own measurements for this, so rather ask about labels
(proximal/distal), ask your surgeon about specifics in cm's. Good luck to
you!
