Question:
Is being age 59 a factor in having the surgery?
I have not read anything from anyone over 50. — [Anonymous] (posted on June 17, 2001)

I am 60 and hoping for a September surgery date. Just stay w/ this site
and you'll be introduced to many "chronologically challenged" wls
candidates.

I was 54 yrs. old when I had my lap RNY; my husband is 12 weeks post-op and
is almost 58. We couldn't have had more perfect surgical and post-op
courses and this surgery has been the best decision we ever made. Please
feel free to write me at [email protected] if there are specific questions I
can answer for you. Best wishes!

Hi,
Please dont take this the wrong way. I think its great that u want the
surgery, but be aware which I am sure u r that the older a person is, IF
there are complications, your chances of recovery or your recovery are
higher. I had ds done in Oct. had many many complications, almost died,
was in hosp. for 3.5 mos and drs told me if I were as young as I am I
probably would not have made it and as it was I almost died 2x. I dont
want to scare u, but just open your eyes to what could happen.

I'm 53 & had an open rny 3/19/01. My weight the day of surgery was 270
& as of last Monday I have loss 60#. Having surgery has been the best
decision I've ever had to make. I even quit smoking so I wouldn't have any
added complications. Surgery went great & so did recovery. Good luck!

I had the surgery on 9/22/00 - I was just shy of my 57th birthday. It has
been the best thing that I have ever done. I have lost 80 pounds so far.
From what I have heard from others, I don't think we lose as fast as
someone who is in their 20's or 30's - but we do lose. I know of at least
four others who are 50+ and we have all lost more than we have ever did on
regular diets - and feel so GREAT. Go for it! Any questions, just email
me - [email protected].

I'm 59 and had my surgery on Feb. 13th. Open Rny & gallbladder removed.
I am one of the slow losers only 50# to date. The surgery and recovery
were uneventful. I was an insulin dependent diabetic and have severe back
problems. I was back to work in 14 days. Best thing I've every done for
myself.
