Question:
I am three weeks post-op and it seems that I have the hiccups an awful lot
I have the hiccups at least once or twice a day. What am I doing wrong? Or is this just something I have to learn to live with? It sure doesn't feel good to hiccup now. — Rhonda H. (posted on May 28, 2001)

Are you getting in LOTS of water, close to 2 qts? Any leg cramps or
anything like that? Dizziness or anything? If not, then it's just break-in
action. I had 'em quite a bit and burped for about 3 months. I didn't mind
the burping, raally, but you can KEEP the hiccups. Ouch.

A bartender friend of mine told me that biting into a wedge of lime with
bitters on it will do the trick to stop hiccups.. This liquid in the small
brown bottle is found near cocktail onions, olives etc in a store like
'Beverages and More'... ps.. He added that it doesn't taste pleasant but it
has always worked... I hope it works for you... Good Luck.... Jo Ann

After my surgery, hiccups were/are a sure sign that I had eaten too fast
(pretty funny in the days when I was only eating a tablespoon or two at a
time - jeez, how long can you drag that out?). - Kate -

Hiccups are a big warning sign to me that I have eaten as much as I can
hold. If I get the hiccups and continue to eat.. I'm in big trouble.. time
to hurl! Are your hiccups coming after you eat? Or are they just out of
the blue?

Hi Rhonda: I hiccupped several different times in the hosptial prior to
having ice chips and water, so it wasn't from anything I did. What caused
it? I'm not sure. Try swallowing over and over without breathing in
between and see if that helps. What will work every time is putting a
teaspoon of sugar in the back of your mouth and swallowing that until it
dissolves, but we can't do that anymore. So I just tried swallowing
without the sugar and it helped. Good luck in getting rid of them. I've
only had them once so far since I've been home. S

The only time I get hiccups is when I've eaten too much. I had a terrible
case last week when I went to a Chinese buffet. I didn't think I had eaten
that much, but I must have as I felt miserable by the time I got home. Then
I got the hiccups on top of the bloated feeling. They make me feel
miserable because they irritate my already upset stomach and I always get
them when my stomach is full so I can't drink water to get rid of them.
