Question:
I am 7 weeks post-op and feel wonderful except for one thing.
It feels like I I have a lump in my throat. I take Prevacid, and have since 1 wk before surgery and my Dr. want me to take it for 4 more wks. It is uncomfortable and of course it makes me swollow more(trying to get it to go down). It is all day and night that I feel this, no matter if I eat or drink, it is still there. What could this be???? — [Anonymous] (posted on May 6, 2001)

Hi- My name is Ann Mcdonald. I had surgery 2 wekks ago. I am up feeling
great. I can eat my proteins. Everything is wonderful but just as you I
have this also. I thought may be I was crazy. I thought that it was just
me. I am glad to hear that someone else has this to. I wish I had an answer
but I will defentally keep reading to see how often this happens. I hope
all works out for you-Ann

Could it be the after effects of the throat/ng tube?

May sound silly -- and I am still a pre-op -- but it could be sinus
drainage. I have pretty severe allergies in the spring and summer and when
my sinuses are draining I get a lump in my throat that I can't swallow as
well.

Some possibilities include: a hiatal hernia you already had, which is now
aggravated by food backing up--eating smaller amounts or more slowly would
help. Spasms of the esophagus is another. Also thrush--yeast overgrowth
due to antibiotics. ASK YOUR MD--it's not something you should put up with
for more than a week or so without consulting the surgeon.--Jesse Mason, RN
