Question:
My PCP told me she would not refer me for this surgery because she believes it is a w
aste of time.I have already decided to get the surgery and am now looking for a PCP who will give me a referal. How do I go about this? Or does anyone have a doctor they could recommend?I would greatly appreciate any help. — Michelle B. (posted on March 27, 2000)

I'm so sorry to hear about your ignorant PCP. What you need to do is get
another PCP. Your insurance doesn't have a problem with you getting another
PCP. Once you get a PCP tell her/him about the surgery, etc. And take it
one day at a time. It's really upsetting to hear about your Doctor telling
you that, because they are supposed to be neutral to any decision that you
make concerning your life. Don't give up hope. If your new PCP has a
problem with it, get another PCP until the one you find, truly supports
your decision....

My PCP avoided my calls and ignored my requests too. I finally came to the
conclusion that she worked for me. I paid her. So I composed an e-mail
stating that I was going to see a WLS surgeon and I needed her to fax him a
letter stating "The Truth", that I was morbidly obese, that she
was treating for diabetes and arthritis, and that I needed to lose weight.
I told her that as my PCP she needed to supply this doctor with a synopsis
of my medical condition so he could provide me adequate, informed care. I
told her if she could not do that then she needed to inform me as to why
and provide me with copies of my medical record. She faxed the letter to
him immediately - without actually referring me to see him. Once my WLS
surgeon had the letter from her comfirming I did have long term
co-morbidities she had been treating me for, I dropped her, got another PCP
that would refer me, and the rest is history...I was approved for WLS. I
know it may not be that easy for everyone but it sure did feel good to
empower myself and let her know I was actually in charge!

You are a nurse, CHANGE PCP's, even if you may change back later. It is
your life and your body, your decision !
Where are you located, what City, State ? check out this site's Dr.
referral or visit the chat room.
