Question:
which diet strategies work best post opn RNY
I am 5 weeks postop, open RNY. I've been working with a dietician who is very helpful, but admits that postop gastric bypass diet is changing so much that there are many eating options available now. I'm doing fine following the protocol she gave me, but I wonder if anyone would share their postop diet plans with me? I'm always open to new ideas and I want the very best nutrition possible along with the maximal weight loss. Thanks so much! — charlene M. (posted on August 14, 1999)

We take 120-180g of real (high quality) protein, not Instant Breakfast, use
NO MILK or SUGAR products at all. We take a certain set of vitamins for
our particular kind of surgery as well. But protein, water, vitamins are
critical to good health and best weight loss.

Hi Charlene. Sorry my response is so late but I was on vacation... I am
also a post-op open RYN. I am 14 months post-op. First let me say the every
surgeon or Center has their own ideas about the post-op diet. I had my
surgery through the Bariatric Treatment Center in Ann Arbor Michigan. My
post op diet consisted of 1 week clear liquids, 1 week full liquids, 2
weeks pureed, 2 weeks soft, then regular diet. I am not suppose to eat
anything that contains sugar, honey, etc..... Fruit sugar, fructose is OK.
I am to make sure I get a certain amount of protein everyday....the
nutritionist told me how much for me specifically. I avoid carbonated
beverages because of the bubbles. The first several months I had to stay
away from caffeine because it causes water loss and could cause a new
post-op to become dehydrated. I had to sip in water, some type of liquid
all day. At 14 months post-op I've learned what is easiest to eat, what is
harder, and what to stay away from. Sugar, especially in the form of ice
cream makes me very nauseated and just feeling bad!!!! Hope you've found
lots of help on this web site. I really like it.
