There are many, many "good" protein drinks on the market if by
good you mean the nutritional content. If good means taste, that varies so
much by individual that you probably will just have to try a few.
Personally I can't stand any of the chocolate or vanilla flavored offerings
but I love the nectar fruit flavors with Fuzzy Navel being my favorite. I
also like the new peach flavor and the strawberry-kiwi. I'm going to try
apple ecstacy next- someone on this forum said it tasted just like a green
apple jolly rancher, which used to be my favorite flavor of jolly rancher.
I can't handle the atkins drinks - I have horrible bloating and gas if I
drink those but some people use them regularly. I haven't looked at Slim
Fast in awhile but seems from pre-op days that they are loaded with sugar.
I order my protein from bariatriceating.com. You can get samples of each
protein flavor you want to try so don't have a ton of money sunk in
something you may not be able to tolerate.

I like the slim fast low carb chocolate and the unjury unflavored. I put
the unflavored in my cyrstal light peach tea and it does not change the
texture or the taste. In addition, I get 32 oz of water and 20 grams of
protein with one scoop. Can't beat that!! Good lucK

Like others have mentioned everyone's taste differs on the
protien drinks. I prefer Champion Whey Chocolate & Vanilla
over anything out there. They taste great & mix very easy.
I feel that the Atkins may possibly make you dump they have
sugar alcohols in them that can be a hidden danger. I don't
happen to like the fruit nectars, but some swear by them. so you can have
samples sent to you before buying a big tub of something you are not going
to like. Good luck & hope you find one you like.Marilyn, the Bearlady

Some programs like to use certain products. In my group slimfast is ok,
carnation instant breakfast is ok too. You have to try several different
ones to find one that you can tolerate. I like the Pro- blend 55 products
that you can get at most GNC. It's kind of expensive so my wallet will be
doing the slim fast. Hope this helps. Oh, by the way you can get samples
from Vitalady so you don't have to get stuck with stuff you don't like. Her
address is on this site but I have lost track of it at the moment. Best
wishes on your surgery. I'll be thinking of you. Jan Camara

The Atkins Chocolate are okay, but a little funny in the aftertaste.
Matrix Perfect Chocolate is WONDERFUL but expensive....have also tried the
EAS shakes in the supermarket and they are ok but you need to make sure
they are REALLY cold.

I found that the "SlimFast" is a little high in Carbs and not as
high in protien. My Dr says that SlimFast is for those dieting w/o
surgery. There are many good ones. I used Atkins for the 1st month after
surgery, but got sick of the taste rapidly. I found that "Whey
Gourmet" is Wonderfull!! as well as "Nector". Tastes are
differant, but look for low carb w/ high Protien (the higher the protien,
the better)

I have been using Body Fortress. I found it at Wal-mart for around $12 for
32 Servings. It is not gritty, mixes well and can put into almost
anything. I have even added to sf pudding to make a good protein pudding.
If you have access to I use the Artista or Stasero sf gourmet syrups to
make a multitude of flavors to mix and match...I have used White Chocolate,
Caramel, Hazelnut, English toffee, strawberry, Cherry, Raspberry, Almond,
and so on to make some awesome protein shakes. I hope this helps..

Atkins is my choice. I will use slim fast only if I am out of atkins. Slim
fast is to sweet for me.

I found a great shake called "Revitalize" that is soy-based
(available at: http://www.revitalize.com ) You can get a sampler for $6.95
(which covers shipping and includes a little shaker cup). After that,
they'll send you a month's supply for $55 (which includes tax and S&H).
That works out to about $1.98/shake. Personally, I like the convenience,
my surgeon's nutritionist says they're great, and most of all - they're
delicious (try them with a frozen banana and/or strawberries... Mmmm...)
Good luck! Dawn H. Lap RNY 04/11/03
