Question:
How do you tolerate the glucose tolerance test during pregnancy after WLS?

I am a little nervous about the glucose tolerance test. I dump on more than 10 grams of sugar. Will this test show positive because I will absorb the sugar quickly? How have others fared in this situation. I am only 8 weeks, but want to be ready when I see the Doctor next Tuesday. I want him to know that they will have to put me in a room or something because I know I will be as sick as a dog.    — peggyp (posted on March 23, 2005)

I DID NOT HAVE TO TAKE IT.. BECAUSE OF THE THE SUGAR IN IT.. THEY TOLD ME TO EAT THE DIET THEY HAVE FOR THE TEST TOO BUT THERE WAS WAY TOO MUCH FOOD FOR ME TO EAT. SO I DID NOT HAVE TO TAKE IT AT ALL.. CHANCES ARE YOU ARE NOT GOING TO GET GESTATIONAL DIABETIES.. DEPENDING ON YOUR SIZE.

I did not have to take it. The did a fasting test, and then I went and ate, and came back 2 hrs later to retest.

If I were you, I would refuse it. You CAN do that. There are other ways of testing and monitoring for diabetes. There has been a lot of discussion of this on the Post-op Pregnancy board lately. Most OBs seeem fairly unaware of exactly how sick this can make us and try to get us to do it. MOST of us dump horribly from it, which is also not good for the baby. Some have gotten through it tolerably, but I wouldn't say many. I had gestational diabetes my first pregnancy, so testing was important. I tried it, dumped like the bejesus, and ended up having my test thrown out because the stuff triggered an esophagus problem I have also. I ended up in the ER getting treated for that, and the medication they gave me would have fouled up my GTT results. So anyway, all that faintness, dizziness, cramping, and near-hurling was all for nothing. If you dump on more than 10g or sugar I would definitely refuse. I think the GTT is something like 70! Other things they could do is to just take a fasting blood sugar, educate you about signs of diabetes, etc. I was also sent home with my own blood sugar monitor to check myself daily. I'll take this over doing that GTT any day. I wish you luck, hon!

You can do a fasting blood test first thing in the morning, then go eat breakfast, and come back 2 hours later for a second blood test. At least that's what I have been told. I told my doctor that I would puke if they gave that sugary stuff to me, (after she told me it had about 100 grams of sugar)I'm 21 weeks along now, and haven't done the test yet. I have an appointment tomorrow and I will ask when she's going to do it, so that I can remind her. Candy

I jsut did this a couple weeks ago, i am now in my 30th week. My doctor sent me to the diabetes center and they had me do finger sticks 4 times a day for a week, once in the morning fasting then after each meal to check my blood sugars.
