Question:
This is in expansion to my previous question.
Dr. has me on Full Liquids until day 21 post op. No pureed foods until then. I feel like Im starving and the protien shakes are disgusting. Im using Designer Way. It makes me sick every time I have to think about even making one. I wish I could have some kind of food, but I dont talk to my nutritionist until Tuesday and she will probably say no anyway. I was wondering if anyone started pureed foods any earlier than 21 days post op. Thanks. — sherrimayne (posted on October 26, 2003)

My doctor does the same thing. In fact, we don't even get a pureed food
stage - we just get applesauce and cottage cheese at 3 weeks post. The
full liquid stage is frustrating sometimes, isn't it? I managed to get
through it by having milk - without the protein powder - and low-fat,
low-sugar yogurt. Also, brothy soups are good, too. Not a great protein
source, but they at least feel more like regular food than a protein shake.
Also, if you're having trouble getting the protein shakes down because of
the taste (I know I did!), try adding a dash of cinnamon and/or nutmeg. It
makes it a lot more palatable, at least for me. Hang in there! It gets
better as the weeks go on. Good luck in your journey!

I started soft foods at 12 days post-op but before that I was on full
liquids but NO protein drinks. I lived on V8 Juice. It was the only thing
that tasted good to me and at least it had some food value. My surgeon
didn't want us to have anything milk based til we were at least 6 weeks
post-op and he didn't want us to have protein supplements til we were 8
weeks out - he thinks the pouch is too sensitive for the protein that
early.
Just because some of us started foods earlier than you are supposed to is
no reason for you to go against your surgeon's and nutritionist's orders.
It is important that you follow your doctor's aftercare plan.

If the Desinger is grossing you out, how are you making it up? How much
what with how much what? There are literally hundreds of others that you
might find more appealing. Although it was the FIRST tasty whey on the mass
market in 1995, it certainly is not the ONLY one. And, uh, they changed
the recipe. The original was a lot smoother, IMHO. LOL! But I've only ever
made mine with water. I use ProScore 100 and Pure Whey sTack now.

When I was on Full Liquids I could have soup (*Healthy Request chicken, but
must drain the chicken out) added milk and power milk. I lived on that
because all the protein drinks were to sweet for me. I was on liquids for
two weeks. I was able to have SF pudding, Cream of Wheat (1 to 2 ozs only)
with skim milk. Then I was moved to baby foods, blended meats. I have to
say that when I was able to drink or eat anything everything tasted GREAT!
Even the baby food, even a water. Check this web site there are alot of
questions and responses about foods that you can eat.

I cannot, in good conscience, recommend that you go against your doctor's
orders. They have reasons for giving the food plan that they do. My
doctor is not your doctor, so you need to do what your doctor says, not
what mine says. At seven months out, I have virtually no problems--I
rarely throw up, I can eat a wide range of foods, I get plenty of protein.
I attribute that to following my doc's orders to the letter early on. That
said, try other liquid proteins if you cannot take the shakes. Early on I
used "double protein" milk (get dry milk powder, and make it
according to package directions, but substitute skim milk for water). I
also now drink Rocamojo, a roasted soy bean coffee substitute. It doesn't
taste much like coffee, but I like it, and my pouch likes warm liquids. It
has 13 grams of protein per cup. You can buy it at Cost Plus World Market,
or on line at rocamojo.com or efoodpantry.com (efoodpantry has the best
prices lately). I know it's hard, but tough it out for the 21 days.
You'll be better off in the end.

My advice - just stick it out! Follow your surgeons' instructions. My
husband and I had the same surgeon for WLS. He has us do 4 weeks of pureed
food after surgery. My DH did the pureed and after about 2 1/2 weeks
decided he "couldn't stand" pureed stuff any more. He started
eating soft foods, and some not-so-soft foods, but somewhere along the
line, he ate something that got stuck at the anastamosis (where the pouch
and intestine are connected). He developed an ulcer and wound up having an
EGD and spending the night in the hospital to make sure the bleeding
stopped. He was anemic and has been on additional iron supplements for
several months more. Moral of the story: do what your surgeon says to avoid
problems down the road!(DH is fine now).

I was never on pureed foods, I was on broth and jello for the first week,
then soft foods after that, then on to other foods. I would say, if you are
really having a hard time with it, to try a little pureed foods, see how
you handle it, or just fill the craving. good luck, and God Bless!

On full liquids I was allowed saltines and hard corn tortilla chips -
believe it or not lol. Any food that will dissolve (or break down)
completely in water (and these do) were legal with my doc. Check with
yours cause it was a God-send!
