Question:
Has anybody had this surgery that has copd ?
How did you get approval from your pulmonary doctor. Has it improved your lung function and your po2 in your blood gases? — john M. (posted on August 30, 2003)

I have COPD, asthma, and pulmonary hypertension. I had my surgery on May
29, 2003. My pulmonologist said the surgery would help, but would not
actually commit to approving the surgery. But, he did say in his letter
that I was at my optimum shape for it. I had an exam with him. He also
asked how I had been doing. At that time, I also was on a CPAP machine for
sleep apnea and oxygen 24/7. We all knew if I lost the weight everything
would be greatly relieved and some conditions would possibly go away. If I
did not lose the weight, I would die soon.
<p>
Some pulmonologists will give you a new pulomonary function test to see
just what shape your lungs are in at the present time in order to see if
you can handle the surgery and anesthesia. It is a good thing because the
anesthesia is such a strain on your lungs and heart. Do not give them a
hard time if they want to do this. I hate that little enclosed booth
myself. But, it is worth it to know where you stand.
<p>
If your surgeon is afraid of you and says you are too high a risk, you
might want to search for a surgeon who will take you on. That is what I
had to do. It took me a while, but I finally found one and he was even in
my insurance network. I am happy to say I am even off my CPAP and oxygen
now. I very rarely use an inhaler even. I have lost over 120 pounds from
my highest recorded weight. I am very happy I took the time to search for
a doctor who was brave enough to take me on and give me back my life.

Besides some sort of copd, I had conjestive heart failure, respiratory
failure, sleep apnea, oxygen deficiency plus much more. However he was
nervous about it but followed me all the way and still does. He knew there
was an even higher chance I wouldn't make it off the table, but we all
worked together as a team and it all went very well. My surgery was on
5/3/03 and down 72 lbs. Do not have to use nebolizer things are really
better. Put your faith in the lord it does help. Good Luck and God Bless,
Joan

My Pulmonologist was very supportive of my having this surgery. However,
he prepared my lungs for the ordeal! He changed my meds, and put me in
Pulmonary rehab for several weeks before surgery. The rehab center really
helped with breathing exercising and slowly increasing my lung capacity. I
am 5 and half months post op now and, for the first time in years, I am
steroid free!! My lung capacity is great and I am looking forward to my
next PFT!!
Best of luck to you.... this surgery really helped my lungs and I hope it
does the same for you!
