Question:
Has anyone had a vasovagal response during laparoscopic RNY?

I recently underwent an attempted lap RNY. Just after the first two incisions were made, I had a sudden drop in blood pressure and my heart rate dropped to 3 beats a minute. They gave me atropine and everything stablized but they terminated the procedure and brought me out of anesthesia. I had numerous cardiac tests and they couldn't find anything wrong with my heart. My doctor said that my problem was most likely a sensitive vasovagal response caused when the carbon diaoxide gas to used to inflate my abdomen put pressure on the vagal nerve. This is the nerve that controls the heart rate. I was told that I can still have lap surgery but will have to have a temporary pacemaker inserted before they try again. Has anyone else experienced this?    — etaylor58 (posted on August 9, 2003)

Personally I would go for the open. Sounds so much safer in your case. They don't need any extra issues when doing the surgery. The WLS is tricky enough. I know You didn't ask for my opinion so ignore if you want. Just want you to be safe and come out alive. Chris

I had the same exact thing happen to me, scared my doctor almost to death. I know how you are feeling right about now scared, afraid, angry. My doctor decided I had a reaction to the latex I took a battery of tests, saw the heart doctor the lung doctor and went for allegery testing the only thing that it showed was that I had a server allergy to latex all the other test came back fine. if I were you I would get a second or even third oppinion just to be on the safe side and make you feel more comfortable. I did have surgery three months later( it took that long to see all the docs) and it all went fine I am down 130 pounds in almost 6 months good luck to you. Dont rush to get on the table make sure you get a million dollar check up
