Question:
Will I be able to get rid of my walker after weight loss?
I use a walker due to extreme weight. Will I be able to get rid of my walker after I lose some weight? I really want to be able to get around like a normal person again. — upmom (posted on June 15, 2003)

You should be able to get rid of your walker! It sounds like you might
have a tough time walking now, so do yourself a favor and see if you can
find some exercise tapes for chair exercises. That will help you
strengthen and tone until you can really get out and walk. Or, after
surgery, you might ask your doctor to refer you to a physical therapist to
be set up with an exercise program specifically to meet your needs. (May be
covered by your insurance.) Best of luck!

Hi my name is Janet and I'm a year out and have lost 101lbs and feel great.
I used a walker before then as I lost weight I used a cane and now I don't
need either of them. It is a whole new life. I have a sit down exercise
tape you could have. I used it at first and it helped me. Send me you
address to my e-mail and I'll be glad to send it to you [email protected]. Your
new friend in WLS Janet

At the time of my surgery I was 863 pounds. I had been homebound for 20
years and in a wheelchair for 12 years. After losing the weight I am able
to walk again. I did have to go to the march of dimes to learn to walk
again. Currently I am about 250 pounds.
