Question:
Has anyone heard of a red rice supplement...
A friend told me of a red rice supplement, in a pill form, from the health food store that is an excellent way to help the body rid itself of cholestrol. Has anyone heard of this? Tried it? Have any more information on it? Big thanks..... — Karen H. (posted on April 30, 2003)

The supplement is called red yeast rice and my husband's doctor (PCP) put
him on it. He lowered his cholesterol from over 300 to under 200. It's
getting difficult to get now though due to some patent issues so he's
recently been switched to policosonol (also OTC). It's cheaper, suppose to
do the same thing, and have even less impact on the liver. Make sure to
run this past your doctor though, since just because it's
"natural", doesn't mean it's necessarily safe for you... and some
supplements can have interactions w/ other prescription meds you may be
taking.
