Question:
1 month post-op -It seems like I get very, very tired after I eat a meal
Does anyone out there get super tired after eating, if so what can I do to not feel so tired. Or will it gradually go away the further along I get? Any help would be appreciated. — Dina T. (posted on April 17, 2003)

What are you eating? High carb sugary foods can create this, high protein
its less common. Tends to get less over time.

You didnt say "what" you were eating.... one month post -
depending on your doctor - could be anything... BUT what it sounds like to
me is your 'dumping' ... If I eat something one of my side effects is
'going to sleep'... Could be for example be using Ensure (some do) and the
surgar content is too high and thus... dumping = going to sleep.

I'm 10 1/2 mos. out now. But when I read your question I remembered so well
how in the begining I used to get soooo tired after I would eat, I mean
like I would want to go to sleep after I ate. Now, I did dump ALOT in the
begining, and the tiredness I felt after a meal wasn't dumping, It was that
feeling you get after a big Thanksgiving dinner.....sleepy time....I don't
remember when it went away for me, but it did. Don't worry it really does
get better the further out you get, it seems like forever but at 6 mos.
things really seem to become very normal for most.
Good luck on your journey! Hugs!

I made the mistake of eating a Nutter Butter cookie a few weeks ago, I got
so tired I couldn't stay awake. I seriously had to lay down. It sounds
like you're dumping to me. As long as I eat protein I'm not tired. Best
wishes:)!

I'm a little over 2 weeks out and also experience this
"tiredness" after I eat (I drink mostly). I even experience it
with the protein shake. I have found that it is when I over-fill. If I
don't let myself get quite as full, I don't have this. I have found my
limit and just take in a little less. I'm not hungry anyway, so it works
so far! At least we're not "dumping" . Anyway, not the way that
I have read most people "dump". Good luck!

It sounds like it might be dumping to me, too. Try increasing your protein
at meals and drastically reducing your carbs and dairy products (i.e., milk
and cheese). If the tiredness disappears, you have your answer!

You know, a couple years ot, we asked our doc that. Were we drinking with
meals?? Nooooo, we both shook our heads. How about SIPPING with meals
(this guy is no dummy)? Well, er, uh, just a little. We stopped doing it
and stopped falling asleep while our guests were still talking and enjoying
their meal. How embarrassing! Could be volume, could be sugar, could be
washing it thru. Once you elimiate the behaviors, then there is asking the
doc. And you can also report what behaviors you changed.
