Question:
HYPER ( not HYPO) thyroid & WLS
I take "Propylthiouracil 50mg" 3x a day at this time. I'd like to know if it is safe to be operated on with HYPERthyroid, and if weight loss surgery can be done as well. I am about 400+lbs and have gained alot of weight in the last few years. I'm sure this medication has contributed to it. Will I loose weight quicker being HYPERthyroid? I'm sure not loosing any weight now & I'm not thin as many HYPER people are. Thank you for any input to my question:-) — Elise H. (posted on March 26, 2003)

I also am Hyperthyroid with Graves Disease. I met with my surgeon today. I
am not medicated though, but it is not a problem with having gastric
bypass. I think that if you are being medicated, you will lose the same as
someone with a regular thyroid, all else equal, although I am not a medical
professional. I would encourage you to contact a surgeon and get some more
information.
