Question:
Any physicians, professionals or knowledgeable individuals in the house

in the house that know anything about this particular lab test? I just had my 6-month labs done. Everything turned out relatively well with the exception of a test ordered by my PCP called a Lipoprotein a or LP(a). I received the results which were somewhat alarming! Mine was 78.6!! The normal from my understanding is to be less than 30!! I looked the test up on the internet and found a test summary which made mention..."Elevated Lp(a) blood levels are commonly observed in patients and families with premature heart disease (CHD)..."The treatment of elevated Lp(a) levels has been controversial. Diet, exercise and the lipid-lowering statins appear ineffective:whereas, estrogen replacement therapy, niacin (nicotinic acid, neomycin and apheresis are more successful. Nonetheless, the clinical effect of lowered Lp(a) levels is not yet known"...I'm REALLY concerned with what this has to do with me. I don't know how else I can improve htis besides doing what I'm doing now...Diet, increased physical activity (aerobics now 3 times per week, tennis, and walking. I'm wondering if this is in my genes or something. I know I can call my PCP, but he is SSSOOO hard to get in touch with sometimes. If there's anyone else that knows anything about this test, PLEASE either email me or let me know~~Hadiyah; a.k.a=    — yourdivaness (posted on March 19, 2003)

Its part of the cholesterol screening. I think it is the bad cholesterol. Anyhow most cholesterol I think is partly hereditary and since you are following maybe there is something they can give you to help lower it. CHeck with the PCP
