Question:
Made the wrong choice for lunch today, have I messed up the weight loss?
I made the wrong choice for lunch today; tater tots with cheese. I feel like such a failure. I will be 3 months post-op tomorrow (03/06/03) and have lost 55 lbs. Why do I feel so guily? I feel like I could cry because I've just let myself down. Is this one time screw up okay? Will this hurt me? Have I messed up the weight loss? — Kellie B. (posted on March 5, 2003)

Dear it was just one meal, you will be fine,, just get ride of the tater
tots, and make a better decision the next time. There are certain foods I
dont allow in my house, since I know I can not control myself. Ritz,
Triscuits, potatoe chips, wheat thins, cheeze-its.. as you can see im a
carb junkie, so they dont come into the house. I had surgery on my stomach
not on my head!!!! Although I made need that surgery also. Good luck, and
just get yourself back on the right track.

It's okay, Kellie- You're only human and allowed to make mistakes. Try to
focus on the 55 lbs gone (that's GREAT!) and go do something positive for
yourself or others. Good Luck, you can get past this!

I agree! It is only one meal and the beauty of this tool is getting back on
the wagon is easy compared to the way it used to be. I am just like you and
bash myself over the tiniest things and I have been part of a post op
therapy group that is very helpful. Just a suggestion. When you look at
your diet it is an all over picture not one food or meal at a time. By the
way you are doing great!

I like the saying, "It's the big picture that counts, not the small
snapshots." This ONE meal is not going to ruin your weight loss. It
may actually be a blessing, because now when you're tempted to eat
something like that again, you can think back to how you feel right now,
and hopefully will then make a wiser choice. We all mess up, I've done it
SEVERAL times myself, just pick yourself up and get right back on that
wagon! Your weight loss so far is awesome, by the way! :-)

Take the word "screw-up" out of your vocabulary, and don't beat
yourself up about this. I'm happy in once sense that that guilty feeling
kicked in...shows you're human, and that you're trying to do your best.
But we all make less than optimal choices at times. You're doing great
with your loss...just keep trying your best and you'll be successful. Your
pouch is not hurt in any way by consuming tater tots and cheese. If you
consumed a BUCKET of tater tots and cheese, maybe! Hugs, Joy

I'm sorry Kelly, but it's the end of the world as we know it!!!! OK so
maybe not. In fact, not only is it not the end of the world, it's not even
the end of the day! You still have to get through dinner (or supper,
depending on where you live). Only God is perfect, we just need to work on
coming as close as we can. Forgive yourself and move on, don't use this as
an excuse to make another bad choice ("I've messed up totally so it
doesn't matter") Ask me how I know about that trick!! LOL Take care,
its really OK.

I think we have to get the guilt out of our heads. It's so hard, I'm the
same way. But I think we shouldn't feel guilty anymore about what we eat.
We've all made bad choices before, but we can move on, get back to our
"diet" or normal eating, and be ok again. If you made a bad
choice for every meal, then yes, that can hinder weight loss. Heck, I don't
like to admit it, but I probably make a bad choice every week, and I'm
still doing well, 10 lbs. away from my goal. Not saying it is great, but I
am just trying to eat pretty normally. Although there is nothing normal
about this surgery and our new protein diets, but I can allow myself to eat
some fast-food or at restaurants once in a while, I just try to make the
healthiest choices there. Look overall how much better (healthier) and less
food you are eating than before! Just make sure you eat protein first, then
have a couple tater-tots! Don't beat yourself up- you've done great!

Wow, Kelly, if I thought I was a failure or a screw up every time I ate
something not good for me, I'd be a depressed mess! No, you haven't messed
anything up. Unless you decide to eat tater tots for 3 meals a day for the
next week, I'd say your OK. Ease up on yourself...

Hi Kellie,
Please don't be down on yourself. I had my surgery Sept 26th 2002 and I
pretty much eat what I want. And have since I was finished with my 6 weeks
of liquids. I have had pizza, fried chicken, tater tots, well anything that
I ate before. I eat very small amounts and didn't have this surgery to be
on a diet the rest of my life. I get my protein even if I have to take a
spoon or two of proteinex. I feel great and I must not be to big of failure
being a rule breaker as some people call me because I have lost 96 lbs so
far!!
