Question:
IS THERE A CARD THAT WE COULD GET TO ONLY PAY A CHILDS PRICE AT RESTAURANTS AND WHERE
I DON'T LIKE TO PAY FOR ADULT WHEN I EAT LIKE A CHILD AT A BUFFET — Shirley F. (posted on February 21, 2003)

You need to check the library on this site, this question goes around and
around. You can get the card from your surgeon, but a Buffet does not have
to let you get the childs price, a regular restaurant might let you order
off the childs menu, but the childs menu is usually full of carbs. Hope
this helps

I have never used my diners card. The kids meals just do not look that
great. I find that I do just as good eating off the appetizer section. That
and a cup of soup and I am set.

Restaurants do NOT have to honor those cards. And most restaurants don't.
here's the way I look at it, my best friend who is very skinny eats very
little and I have NEVER in my life seen her asked for a reduced priced meal
b/c she only nibbled at her entree. So why should we demand reduced
prices? They didn't charge us triple when we packed down three full plates
pre op at a buffet, why should they charge us half b/c we only nibble off
one plate?I guess I don't understand the whole card thing. Eating out is a
social enjoyable thing. I don't like to share entrees, I like my own.
sometimes I bring the left overs home, sometimes i don't. Thin people have
rotting food in their refridgerators and don't clean their plates, isn't
this the goal of all of us--to be thin"normal"? IMHO, save the
stress from arguing with the manager about getting a child portion and
enjoy your outing. saving a couple of bucks isn't worth it. We all new
this going into surgery. I love to go out to eat and do it often. I enjoy
good food(healthy of course).
but if you want to haggle with the restaurants and argue about a child's
plate(which usually has gross kiddie food on it), go ahead. I just hope you
don't ruin the people you are with dining experience. I'm not trying to be
rude, but I see people post boycott this place b/c they wouldn't honor the
wls card etc..and I just want to laugh. it is a card that can be printed
off the internet, it has no value and I wouldn't honor it either.
good luck in whatever you decide to do

I totally agree with Jennifer. Why should restaurants charge us less? If
you're so new that you can't eat that much, stay away from buffets. Get an
entree or appetizer and take the rest home. I love my doggie bags.

I agree with the other posters. Order an appetizer or the the soup or
order an entree and take some home for future meal(s).

Also sometimes you can just explain the situation to the waiter. I took my
family to a hotel in Stroudsburg, PA (in the Poconos) last fall for a
weekend away from things. On Sunday, they had a brunch (at $15 a pop) in
the restaurant - nothing else. I explained to the waiter about my surgery
and he let my wife share her brunch with me - no extra charge...JR

Shirley, just my 2cents, but, i don't believe in these cards. I live in
NYC and dine out A LOT, sometimes 3-4 times per week. Businesses would go
out of business with this type of practice. My suggestion, order an
appetizer like someone else said or order a whole meal and you will have
leftovers for 2 meals. Good Luck. Heather (Open ENY 8/15-305/210/150)

Shirley, my surgeon has these cards availabe in his office for anyone to
take. However, although I have not had the surgery as yet, I can see
certain situations where this may cause a problem when dining out. Because
the card is a "request" and not "legal" restaurants and
their management do not have to honor the cards. The best way to get child
sized portions if from fast food restaurants, or just order an appetizer or
share an entree with someone.

You usually get the card from your doctor but check the library there are
places to get one. The resturants in my area are happy to help us out and
let us use them. It is nice to go to a buffet and our local Golden Corral
is nice about the use but insists on the card. I understand how you feel.
I also work in a public setting and we make accomodations for many
different situations. Our customers always come first. We make enough
money to aid those with special needs. I like a buffet because sometimes
you never know how something will be prepared or how you will handle it and
a buffet gives you a better range of choices.

Like the other posters, I received one from my surgeon, but I won't use it.
I want to be normal, not singled out because of my surgery. All of the
items on a child's menu is fried and loaded with carbs anyway. Appetizers
are the way to go!!

You can generally get one from your surgeon or support group moderator.
Best of luck to you.

I have a card and have only used it a couple of times. Once was a
family-type restaurant chain that has a nice kid's turkey dinner -turkey,
green beans and mashed potatos, and once at a buffet. I felt a little funny
using it at the buffet and probably would not have tried it except for the
fact that an out-of-town relative was paying for a large group of us.
Usually I do what the others suggest - soup and/or an appetizer (and the
appetizers are usually more than i can eat, but are sharable!) or, I order
a sandwich without the bun. I had a great marinated chicken breast with
cheedar cheese just last night, and ate a few of the skinny fries that came
with it. I could by no means finish it, but it was really good and I
didn't feel like I was wasting a lot of food.

I'm with Jen on this. Some places let kids of all ages order the kids meals
but I never tell them I had a surgery. If I have a taste for a regular meal
I order and take the rest home. My husband loves leftovers :) I have been
asked by servers if something was wrong with meal and I just say No,I guess
I wasn't really hungry if this happens. Though sometimes I think they think
"who's she fooling she'll wolf that down as soon as she gets home LOL.
Other times I order an appetizer

I just don't do buffets. I order what ever I want on the menu and have
leftovers for days. Most of the stuff on the kids menus is fried crap that
I don't need and wouldn't have fed my kids either. A cup of soup, a side
salad, shrimp coctail are nice easy choices. I still like to eat so I get
my 14 oz ribeye, eat 3 oz, at the restaurant, another 3 oz on my salad the
next day for lunch, maybe make it into a stirfy the day after that. I
liked what Al Roker said on dateline, I paid for the food and if I want to
throw it out that's my business. I don't believe that eating to not
"waste it" is healthy. No clean plate club at my house.

Shirley,
I live in Las Vegas, I have the little card, but to be honest I don't use
it, I go to a buffet maybe once every-other month... What I did that you
might want to check into was, I went online and bought the Entertainment
book, it was on sale for $15, It has so many coupons in it, it's unreal. It
allows both my husband and myself to go out to dinner, without having to
show a card, flash the tummy, you name it... All the coupons are buy one
get one free.
I can hardly eat anything, so I pick.. and the rest goes to the trash, I
don't feel bad for wasting food , seeing I didn't pay for it... Our last
meal for 2 people (steak) ran a whopping $8.00, for both... It was great, I
keep the book in my car and when we feel the need to go out and be social I
use it... I've gotten my money back and more... Even gave me a chance to go
out and try different foods.
Good luck
