Question:
Is there a specific type of iron that is better?
Is there a specific type of the mineral, iron that is better for those of us who have had WLS? I hear from other members that we NOT to use ferrous sulfate, but that is what I'm told by some members that their surgeons are basically recommending this type for their patients. Like the *calcium questions*, does it matter? — yourdivaness (posted on February 19, 2003)

I was told by other post-ops I've talked to that carbonyl iron is the best
kind for us.

My surgeon recommends ferrous fumarate - 325 mg's per day. If you can find
Vitron C (last time I checked, www.CVS.com had it), you can take those.
They are 200 mg's each. I would find out how much your doctor recommends
for you because too much iron can damage the liver.

We recently had a speaker at our support meeting from Bariatric Advantage.
The speaker was a Dr. that specializes in nutrition. They recommend Iron
Citrate and sell it on their web site. This is the form that I am taking.

Calcium and Iron for women especially, are very important. I bought them
both from GNC. I take "Women's Iron Complete" every other day.
Make sure you get the box that says "enteric coated." The
regular one always repeated on me and made me feel gross. The coated one
is 10 times better. As far as calcium goes I take Barefoot Coral Calcium
Plus once a day with my multivitamin. It is the best to take especially if
you are not a milk drinker. It has 1500 mg of calcium. Hope this helps!
Good luck.
